I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that while we are not (as a nation) entirely passed the idea of disregarding otherwise skillful politicians because of their personal lives, we are getting there.
Honestly, even if true, I don’t think McCain’s grumpy, out-of-touch image would necessarily suffer from this. It didn’t derail the Clinton machine 16 years ago, it might make him seem more normal. Just my two cents.
