Here is what the environmentalist/luddite crowd never bothers to think about. There ARE NO alternative energy technologies on the near horizon (except for, of course, nuclear, which is “evil”, and therefore forbidden). Air and solar can’t provide enough, and hydrogen cells for cars are basically still in the theoretical stage.

In his book Collapse, Jared Diamond does a great breakdown of this. Of course, none of it matters to environmentalists, who in their modern incarnation are better described anti-capitalism and anti-technology rather than pro-environment.
