Your discussion of Madrigal’s Nazi-Apartheid-Utah passage reminded me of similar moments in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma when he talks about the evils of modern fertilizer (again, with a link to the Nazis) and the cultivation of corn. These so-called “environmental journalists” always figure that they have to invoke the Nazis to scare people away from what otherwise might be considered a public good.
