At a University of North Florida speaking event this past January, former CENTCOM commander General John Abizaid told the audience that what kept him awake at night was not the situation in Iraq, but rather the situation in Pakistan.
That is one scary country.
With regard to the elections, does it really matter who wins? It seems the military in Pakistan usually decides whether it feels like being ruled by an elected leader or not. That is the same military that supported Islamists in the Kashmir region, leading to the Kargil War of 1999, when Indian forces took action in Operation Vijay to stop Islamist terror attacks. It is also the same military that supported the Taliban regime in Afghanistan prior to the 9/11 attacks. And it is the same military that enters into negotiations with Pashtun tribes that sympathize with al Qaeda.
Throw in Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal and you have place dreamt up by a Tom Clancy – Stephen King collaborative effort.
