If this were sometime in 1930-1953 I have no doubt Chomski would be lecturing us on the benevolence of Stalin.
I think that Chomski merely childishly delights in the role of outsider. Having observed that many of histories great thinkers have been opposed to many aspects of their own societies, he has leapt to the fallacious conclusion that being opposed to ones own society makes one a great thinker.
He has forgotten that the evil and destructive are also commonly opposed to aspects of their own societies and that they are far, far more common than great thinkers.
