Conservatives – if there really are any seriously considering this sort of move – are way behind the curve here. The Anti-Bush crowd got a jump on this years ago.
Go here and scroll down to hear the story of two “reformed” government bureaucrats (i.e., they lived off the taxpayers most of their lives) who relocated to Costa Rica years ago. You may need to register (free) to view the video near the bottom.
Here’s the salient bit from David Murray, starting at 00:02:07 -
“We originally came to Costa Rica to get away from the United States.
I made the commitment to start looking for an ‘out’ – a place to go – Wednesday after the election in 2004 when Ohio went for George Bush. … I had little hope that things were going to get any better or any more comfortable in the United States. And so we started looking for an alternative.”

Poor David – ye of little faith. You and your “family” (Mr. Cat) are going to miss out on all the wonderful socialist goodies now!
Costa Rica has pretty rampant violent car theft / petty theft / home invasion problems. Family dogs are regularly poisoned to facilitate daytime break-ins. Crime is also growing recently due to encroaching drug trafficking and there’s increasing tension from the north (Nicaragua – nice regional neighbor to have… not). Much of this is suppressed by their media so as not to adversely affect tourism, but it’s there. Note that many of the newer, modern single-family homes in Costa Rica (the ones that appeal to us gringos) are built on gated, high-fenced compounds and/or have security bars on the doors and windows.
Move to Costa Rica to live in a prison with a bunch of expatriate Anti-Bush hypocrites like the Murrays as neighbors?? I’ll pass, thanks.
An Independent Republic of Texas has far more appeal.
