Re: Witch burnings (used as a figure of speech) Should you be at all interested the # of “witches” pressed to death in Salem : one. # of “witches” hung at Gallows Hill, 1692: nineteen. Another dozen died in prison. Thirty-two persons out of a population of approx. 600. I suppose that is better than burning – with the exception of being pressed to death.

Re: the Doukhobors. The group you are referring to (Russian immigrants) were a sub-sect of the Doukhobors called the Sons of Freedom. Only about 200 of the 2500 Sons of freedp, were ever actively involved in burning and public nudity. The most damage they did was to themselves. Their children were taken away from them and taken to live in residential camps.

Iluvtea: perhaps your family member should remain at home if he finds our country uncomfortable. Rather like your past Governor of California, Arnold S., who so rudely and racistly referred to my city as Hongcouver.

Canada has a huge multicultural population and I think that it is time that Americans understood that “Multiculturalism” is embedded in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the law.

Fundamentalist Islamists are not welcome in Canada – neither are any other terror groups – but people of any ethnicity or religion are welcome here provided that they are prepared to live by our rules. For years I lived in a community that was largely Ismaili – our children played together, went to school together and the parents were friends. My son’s best friend was Ismaili – and we are Jews committed to Israel – everyone got along.

As I have mentioned before, the government information for immigrants to Canada stresses zero tolerance for many practices common in Muslim countries.
