It’s not that the medieval mind-set began in the 50s. By allowing them to nationalize the oil wells, Eisenhower created a situation in which medieval tribalists were granted an endless source of valuable loot. It’s the oil money that makes it possible for their religious fanaticism to exist amidst the trappings of a modern society. If the oil wells dried up tomorrow, in twenty years they would either be swallowed up by western civilization, or swallowed up by the desert.
