That’s the catch in this region – the more you try to appease them the stronger they believe they are and the weaker you seem to them, and the stronger they believe they are and the weaker you seem to them the less likely they are to make any concession for peace. If you feed this dynamic enough they eventually believe they can win a war, and if they can win they see no reason to avoid war. Once upon a time Westerners wanted victory and great empires for themselves. Then they wisened up and came to the conclusion these goals don’t worth the death and suffering of many millions of people, and that peace is the most desirable state. Now they can’t imagine that some people in this world may still want victory and empires like they did in the past.
