I’m sorry to roll my eyes at this latest “The UK IS Going Down The Toilet” article, but its just silly.
First, the police were called out to protect the demonstrators from the people in that town who were understandably outraged at the muslim demonstrators–like a group of people from Iowa would be if Code Pink showed up there. But the cops had to prevent the demonstrators from being beaten up: a wounded demonstrators might make everyone grimly happy, but its not right OK?. And it would inflame the moderate muslims who were not there. So the Brit cops did the right thing, even tho I expect they wanted to pulverize the demonstrators.
Why does this piece suggest this type of thing is new? Returning Vietnam Vets were subject to spitting, hisses, called baby killers and worse. Movies pilloried them as unstable timebombs. That was by US citizens in the late 60′s and 70′s. We had the same “Ominous Signs” media reports. Not much later we elected Reagan, Bush and Bush. So much for the “ominous signs.”
Britain surely erred when their Labor governments allowed near unrestricted immigration of muslims. Unlike the hindus and Buddists, the sons of the muslim imports are angry: not at the benefits their families got and get, not at the impeccable fairness of the Brits to them, but at anything that is not islamic. The Brits failed to properly assimilate these people and we are letting the same problem happen here.
Fortunately, we have more people and more space, but the problem is notably more acute in urban areas like Minnesota where somalis have settled in large numbers (after being brought here for reason I’ll never understand–couldn’t we have brought in some Danes or Brits or more people from mexico? None of them have religious hang ups). But now one state wants to subsidize msulim housing; colleges ahve instituted footwashers for muslim students and “women only” hours in the gym. So you can bring your “Ominous signs” routine to the US right now.
The brits are doing what they can to assimilate the angry muslims as fast as possible or isolate them. Lets hope we do as well over the next ten years.
