So, Mr. Green, you don’t like it, but your’re willing to accept it? A win is a win, eh? Why bother asking what voters think? Why not revert to a knife fight behind closed doors? Democracy is a messy business, true enough, so let’s not bother with the farce of primary elections. The electorate is just a mob after all.
Except that in the process of a power struggle we might dispense with the rule of law. One law for the common man, another for those powerful enough to bypass the checks and balances. Perhaps a Nietzschean world where the will to power is all that matters?
Maybe you’re right. A win is a win by whatever means. “The means justify the ends.” Doesn’t sound terribly “republican” does it? If (when) the republican model fails (as it always has in the past), we had better hope the Imperium is up to the task of running an empire.
Process matters. Back room deals are not democratic. Getting away with it doesn’t make it right. God Save the Republic!
