Open up to the people? Not really. I would strongly recommend reading Mark Stricherz’s Why the Democrats Are Blue: Secular Liberalism And The Decline Of The People’s Party. The author contends that in 1968 “a group of secular professionals seized control of the Democratic Party.” They are the ones who ultimately picked George McGovern to lead them to disaster a few years later. Dishonest pacifism is among their nonnegotiable issues.
