The Quebec Act’s establishment of the Roman Catholic Church is a very little discussed fact. When I first learned it I felt I had been used as a pawn by those who claim there is a long tradition of anti-Catholicism in the United States.
I will not deny there is a long tradition of anti-Catholicism, but in the negative reactions to the Quebec Act the issue was government support for the Catholic Church, not jsut allowing it to exist.
