No, Professor Ahmed, the Founders Were Not So Fond of Islam
However “un-churched” is different than “non-religious”. Many people who did not go to Church would read the Bible on a regular, if not daily basis, and the Bible was had in most homes. Those who did not affiliate with specific denominations would in general favor a belief in God.
Anyway, the whole point of this article is that it is not true that the Founders looked to Islam and would have objected to burning the Qu’ran. At least if we accept the Supreme Court rulings on 1st admendment protections, burning the Qur’an is political speach, and it is definantly wrong for government officials to speak out against political speach. I guess private individuals can, but government officials should not.
I think burning the Qur’an is stupid, rude and pointless. It is unneccesarily provocative and the person who did it was an attention seeker. Still, people have the freedom to do things that are rude, and the government should not step in to try and stop such actions.
