I’ve just read two stories this morning. One was how here in the UK Muslim men’s four – yes four – wives will now have some recognition, whereas this country’s law permits one wife. The second is that female Muslim trainee nurses and other medics are refusing to scrub up properly because they risk bearing their forearms. Oh, diddums!
New rules have been introduced in an effort to reduce hospital-acquired infections (although why we didn’t have sensible rules since Florence Nightingale goodness knows!), and these require thorough scrubbing, including the forearms.
Would you be in a hospital while a Muslim nurse is training there? I for one would feel distinctly uncomfortable about it.
There’s also a row going on in Oxford at the moment: Muslims there are seeking permission to broadcast via loudspeaker the three-minute caterwauling that is their call to prayer three times a day over the city’s famous dreaming spires.
A lot of us here are getting thoroughly pissed off.
