Bawer is clearly and concisely identifying a problem that exists in Europe. Part of his frustration is that many Europeans refuse to stand up for what is right because they don’t want to be called racist. We can see the exact same problem and lack of critical thinking with comments to the article. Some posters are so threatened by any real life problems that exist when generous Europeans allow foreigners with very different values to go to their country, settle in their countries, then try to make the country like the one they left.
Cultural sensitivity is a two-way street. Multiculturalism requires that all cultures tolerate and treat with respect the other cultures in the society. It is amazing to see how outraged the ultra-left becomes when real problems requiring real solutions are addressed. They refuse to acknowledge the problem. The degree of denial is shocking.
