I think there’s something else in play here. The Left has long denigrated the role of religion in Western civilization; the secular is their ideal. Therefore, because they believe religion should have no power in modern society, they are blind to the religious power that underpins Islam. This is, IMO, a large blind spot in the Left’s world view.
