Quick update on availability. On 2/27/2008 in Northern VA, .40 S&W JHP and .357 in JHP were plentiful (110 & 125 grain for the latter). 9mm, .380, and .38 Spl (in JHP or whatever) were nowhere to be found. 5.56 and .223 in FMJ and JHP were available in several brands, to include value packs. Ditto for SC last weekend. On-line .380 is rarely available, .38 Spl JHP is hard to find, but .38 Spl wadcutters and roundtips are widely available.
I conclude that folks are buying a lot of personal protection ammo for concealed carry handguns as anybody looking for a Ruger LCP can tell you. Handgun selection is poor in .38 Spl, but at least are still available if you’re in a hurry and not too picky.
