About “leave it to the police” … I live 3 hours from the Mexican border. A while ago, I pulled into my garage and started the door down. As it neared the floor, someone stuck his foot inside it and started it up again. I got out of the car to see why the door was going up, and found myself staring at a gun.

Maybe the only English the guy knew was “Give me your wallet.” He said it twice. I did. By the way, I saw 6 feet. He had two young “trainees” behind him, though I never saw their faces, and he didn’t wear a mask. He wasn’t concerned with the possibility of being caught.

I was on my cell phone to 911 while they were still visible running away with my wallet. The police arrived 21 minutes later. (Cell phone logs are useful for documentation!) Over the next months, I believe I located the gang that cased my house in advance of the robbery, and even got pictures of their vehicles with license plates. I wrote it all up in a multi-page manuscript. The police could not have been less interested. I could not even get the local Batallian Commander to keep an appointment with me, even after complaining in person to the City Council.

The next guy who tries something like that will not find me as easy a target.
