this “hot” round in its expensive platforms is only about 10-15% better in terms of actual energy (foot-pounds) than the old but still excellent .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire-
The .223 round is intended for weapons that are fired on full auto. The M 14 rifle was discontinued because you cannot control it on full auto. The 30-06 round has too much recoil. Also, the AR 15 was adopted when the military changed from long range target accuracy as a standard to short range pop-up target shooting. It’s not intended for long range. It’s just a hot .22 round.
I remember a very similar atmosphere in the Carter presidency and for the same reasons. Reagan ended it but I wonder if another Reagan will appear.
