Here’s a clue: participation is optional.
If you’re squeamish, the police will protect you. Obama will protect you. That “Gun Free Home” sign in your front yard will protect you. Your burglar alarm will protect you. If not, I’m sure that condescending light of intellectual superiority you project on everybody who you think is inferior to you will protect you and your families.
Personally, I support the idea of obvious soft targets. I just don’t plan to be one.
