I am a married church attending Republican in the automotive advertising industry (I work for a major Asian Company-not Toyota) and have watched this “boycott” develop and would like to make a few points:
1. Ford is not even a very good advertiser in the gay market. Toyota and General Motors for example have much better gay marketing efforts than Ford. Remember the show “Queer eye for the Straight Guy?” GM was the main sponsor of the show, but not a peep from the AFA. For all of you people out there who refuse to do business with companies that advertise to gays or treat gays like people you will be riding your horse to a very poorly stocked store.
2. Toyota is the biggest gay advertiser, by far. Will the AFA boycott them? NO WAY! Two reasons for this. Even Don Wildmon knows you don’t boycott companies on the ascension, or it will show how impotent his anti whatever group really is. Next Toyota is building an assembly in Mr. Wildmon’s hometown of Tupelo Miss. Toyota could be the national sponsor of NAMBLA and Don Wildmon wouldn’t say a word.
3. Is the AFA saying that gays should just go away and not be a part of society? Should they not be allowed to buy cars? The AFA thinks that being gay is a choice. Does the AFA really think that anybody would choose to be a member of one of the most hated groups in America? If two men live together, how does that affect my family? In my contact with gays, I have found them to be witty, enjoyable people to be around. My opinion on this issue has evolved over the years, but this boycott has truly shown me the ugly side of people and how they can do a lot of harm pretending that they know God’s will. I think somebody like Don Wildmon and his group is not very different from Fred Phelps and the “God hates F*gs” crowd.
4. If the AFA had absolute power in this country, what would they do? Gay gas chambers? Deportations? It’s very clear that at the very minimum gays would be second class citizens, and not given the basic rights of freedom.
Just some food for thought
BTW One thing that made me chuckle was that one of the “signers” of the boycott pledge was Ted Haggard, the televangelist who resigned from his pulpit in shame amist a scandal involving a male prostitute. How ironic
