It’s a little hard to believe just how much you right-wingers have your heads stuck in the sand. You’ve decided long ago that Obama is the devil, and you view everything through that preconception. But look around. Is this country really doing well? Where have the fruits of Reagan and Bush gotten us? We live in the greatest, richest country on earth, yet people who have lost their jobs, and therefore their health insurance and income, are left to die from diseases and conditions that could be treated. Do you really believe in an America where we leave our neighbors to die if they can’t keep up with the rat race?
Because that’s the America that conservatism has wrought. You can argue all day about free markets, and what competition can do, but the evidence is staring you in the face. Think for a minute about it. You know someone who’s had trouble paying their medical bills, maybe they were even driven into bankruptcy. Maybe they simply didn’t get treatment. Maybe it was you, maybe it was a friend, or a friend of a friend.
Maybe you should step back and think about what you actually believe in. Because from where I stand it seems clear that you stand for a country without compassion, where citizens love their flag but turn their backs on their neighbors. You stand for a stubborn ideology without ideas, one that has only one solution, that of lower taxes, for every problem big and small.
The left doesn’t only want bigger government. We do believe in the free market. The system creates profits brilliantly. We get that. But a rising GDP says nothing about fairness, about health, about living conditions, about basic morality. The job of government is not to get bigger, it’s to recognize those things that the market will not accomplish on it’s own, like disaster relief or ensuring that every child in America can see a doctor when they’re sick. The unfettered capitalism that led to this country’s economic rise also gave us slavery, and child labor, and brutal working conditions in factories and slaughterhouses and in the mines. Captialism in its native form does not care about people, or about morality or ethics. That’s the job of government.
Have you all forgotten American history?
