There’s a difference between being PUNK and being A PUNK.
Others above have explained the core values of punk – and one of them is being true to who you are and not hiding it. Joe Strummer was a Marxist and never tried to hide the fact, as our Dear Leader does. (OTOH, Johnny Ramone invoked the name of George W. Bush when the band was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame.)
The Ramones were punk. The Clash were punk.
Teh One’s just a punk.
