Racism and Hate Rear Ugly Heads in Britain

This article makes me almost glad about political correctness in America. At least in the university setting in the U.S., you have to be really, really careful what you say, how you refer to different groups, etc. While it can feel like a limiting of one’s freedom of speech, it does create a society in which we attempt to be careful of how we relate to others.

But a lot of this doesn’t even have to do with political correctness but with plain old decency and graciousness. Having travelled extensively in the UK and even lived in Scotland for two years, I miss the England of tea parties, Masterpiece Theatre, and old-world charm. Alas . . . I guess that England only ever existed in the imagination. Didn’t it?
