Donna V: No disresepct intended to Palin or her supporters. But I’m on the planet that just handed an Presidential election to a virtual unknown. The GOP nominee, old, tired, and underfunded, had been in the senate for decades but stood for nothing in the public eye except an honorable war record 40 years ago. Before that the voters ended GOP’s control of congress which the GOP speaker had seemingly run as a lobbyist lounge.

The GOP establishment won’t get out of bed before 11:00 a.m. to attract new voters and seems to delight in mulishly repelling them. They hardly embraced Palin, did they? Instead, McCain’s handlers eargerly leaked the GOP establishment’s view of politicians from outside the Beltway when they tagged her as a “hilbilly” loose in Neiman Marcus. She may have been a successful, twice elected governor–but she ate deer, shot guns, had lots of kids and didn’t have a JD or MBA from Haaarvard or Yale. Thus it has always been: Reagan, an actor and lifeguard, was never taken seriously either, until he extracted power from the voters. The GOP insiders had always preferred New York Gov Rockefeller to Nixon too, as a more polished insider.

Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan observed as much years ago when noting the GOP insistence on filling spots in the White House with the sons and daughters of party stalwarts, while ignoring smart newcomers. The inbred GOP is literally encrusted with plaid-pants wearing bores that see and hear nothing new or fresh and aren’t that smart to begin with. They had their best recent success with a former actor and lifeguard, not one of their chosen. They are about as welccoming as the boring and snotty Fraternity on Animal House or the indulgent Roman Senate in the early empire.

The GOP could do itself a lot off good by trying to remember (like Reagan)what it stands for as opposed to simply being against things because the fuds in charge oppose them.

It won’t get there by making fun of Pelosi’s photo, whining about how unfair it is that the left makes films while the GOP is out golfing and trying to reconcile hostility to gay marriage with what is supposed to be a party that embraces individual freedoms. Regards,
