The Republican Party was founded as the free state party to prevent the spread of slavery, and, under Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president, slavery was abolished, and the 13th, 14th, and 15 amendments to the U.S. Constitution were passed. The Republican Party always supported civil rights; it was the southern Democrats who supported racial segregation. (And it was the southern gentleman from Virginia who introduced Jim Crow into the Civil Service when he was president, the Democrat Woodrow Wilson.)
