As far as reaching out to Republicans …. “I’m inviting you to my Superbowl party so you have to agree with me” isn’t reaching out in any meaningful way. But mainly, the Republicans have serious reservations about the bill, as do some Democrats. Therefore they are voting their assessment of the bill. Does reaching out mean ignoring their own judgment?

In the case of the census this is simply false. The Constitution puts the census under the control of the Commerce Secretary not the president. if Pres Obama continues to press this I expect it to be brought before the Supreme Court.
