Monicagate may have given this shift a lot more momentum, but the maudlin coverage of Princess Diana’s death a few months before should have alerted many people to the fact that there was clearly something wrong in mainstream media land. (Likewise, the coverage of the death of JFK, Jr. in 1999 further exposed the media’s bias.)
