Who Says 60 Million Americans Live on $7 a Day?

I have no problem with David Cay Johnston’s article. He appears to present all the facts, and a careful reader can draw accurate conclusions. The problem is that it turned into a game of “Telephone.” Subsequent articles presented the information selectively, particularly the attention-getting $7 a day. Headline writers then skimmed the articles and decided that it means people “live on” that amount – when in fact it’s the amount reported to the IRS, before supplementary benefits from the government. If I were Johnston, I’d be angry at the way my facts were twisted by other writers, not with Annie Jacobsen’s article.
