But the union people, government employees, teachers, professors, fireman, policemen etc. clearly ARE all middle class based on their incomes. It’s just that their hobby-horses and bogey-men are the opposite those of much of the rest of the middle class, which is non-union or small business. That is why the rhetoric on both sides is half true, at best, because the middle class is not just one thing. If a middle class citizen has a government job, then his/her view of taxes will be quite different from the views of those who do not have government jobs. This should be self-evident, but because this fact does not fit in with either side’s agenda, all sorts of half-true generalities follow.
