I also agree with private action instead of using the government to force taxpayers to fund an endless list of pet causes.
Government is an entity that has the legal power to enforce a certain set of principles inside a limited geographic area, the jurisdiction. Outside the jurisdictional area (its sovereign territory), any enforcing is de facto no matter how well intentioned. Wars, for instance, are not legal, they can be done for a just cause, but is still de facto action.
So, it’s important to limit the power of governments to make these interventions out of their territories. Cover wars, wars, sabotage, espionage, etc; has to be done under certain legitimate conditions, which is usual the self preservation, or defense. Because all these actions cost a lot of money, time, lives, etc. While war or espionage can be justified to preserve the freedom of the US citizens (for Freedom is a major value in the USA), not so the religious freedom of other countries (that may not value freedom at all). Copts hate jews and are hated by muslims, so let them drink their own poison. Private citizens can take private action together with other people who share their values and goals, but using the government to force everyone to collaborate is not good. Government, as an entity, has to care about the survival of the state primarily.
