Excellent journalists don’t make themselves or their world-view the story. Sam/Joe may come to it with a different sensibility than many in the msm, but it’s still about his persona, his “anger” at the way the press has covered the war, etc. etc. It’s slightly preferable to denying any agenda, but not by much.

Paul Berman wrote that wisdom consists of the ability to be shocked. One advantage for a novice walking into a story that has been endlessly dissected is the lack of obligation to nod at all the theories and positions others have staked out over the years. He can bring an immediacy, an edge. Sending a guy with an angle erases all that. I wish you had chosen someone who was content to be a nobody.
