The French purportedly have a saying along the lines of, “No one is intelligent enough to be a good liar.”
The reason the adage is true is that there are too many points at which reality checks can occur which cannot be accommodated by the lie — by definition: a lie that conforms to all the facts is no lie at all. The defense and maintenance of a lie depends on concealing, ignoring, and distorting facts.
When it comes down to desperate fast talk, you know the liars’ IQs are showing themselves as inadequate to the task of keeping it going. Ederlin is at that point.
