TomTom said “I would like to believe all this, but what’s odd is that Ijaz has apparently regressed in the past decade. Asking Romney the Muslim question in a public forum indicates that subtlety eludes him.”

Having spent the last two years working with an Arab man on the Saddam documents, this sounds completely true. I think a lot of people just have no idea how much it takes to operate smoothly in a foreign culture. Learning the language is probably the easy part. Not knowing how to add the proper inflections, word it subtly is common. And my friend exhibits the same passion to support this country and stop Islamic extremism.

This is a fascinating inside look. I think Turabi may have been closer to UBL than he admitted. This article let’s him get away with the denial a little too much. Lot’s of people involed with UBL make this same claim “hardly knew him” because they knew he was trouble and being tagged as an ally would mean problems down the road. Off the top of my head, I think they were known locally as friends, neighbors, even intermarried families. I think it most likey that Turabi was involved at some level with linking Zawahiri and UBL to Saddam.
I find it hard to believe that such pledges of cooperation would have been followed through on. I think it more likely they were positioning to stall what they feared was a coming invasion. It find it improbable but not impossible Turabi would have turned over UBL. However, we sure as hell should have given it a shot. Thanks Sandy Burgler
