Bill Clinton’s people, on a gut level, did not dare allow terrorism to take center stage. There is no way in hell that he would have been reelected had the threat of Islamic nihilism dominated the 1996 election! Clinton was our “vacation from history” leader. The focus had to remain on “it’s the economy, Stupid.” A large number of Americans, myself included, were conned into believing that the Soviet Union’s dissolution meant the world was now a much safer place. Threats could now be taken less seriously. At the worst, the criminal justice system could handle the situation. What can I say? We were idiots.
