Mark, exactly right. The CIA predicted Saddam was likely to use Islamic terrorists if he felt war with the US was coming. At the same time, the intelligence product Iraqi Perspectives Project makes it clear he felt like he was at war with the US since Desert Storm. And let’s face it, we were at war with constant bombing campaigns and air defense engagements many times from 1991 to 2003. Why wouldn’t he feel he was at war?

Richard, thanks for the tip, 1 for 2 on that one.

Andrew, the “I wasn’t the only one speeding, why didn’t you stop them?” defense doesn’t work for traffic tickets either :) BTW, Al Qaeda is first and foremost a Saudi government opposition group. And Dave nails it when he says Pakistan jihadis are a serious threat. Recently, Maulana Fazlur Rahman a Taliban leader and al Qaeda supporter was nearly elected Prime Minister, which would have been a complete disaster. Giving Musharraf a bit of a break on that one is a no-brainer. But if you are watching recent event in Pakistan, you would know Musharraf has begun a war against al Qaeda now that he has procured Fazlur Rahman and his MMA. Of course it helped when al Qaeda put Fazlur Rahman on a hit list. Leave it UBL to hack off his own support base in Pakistan just as he did in Iraq.

Thanks to PJmedia for the post!
