Donna,

Thanks for the link to Eugene Genovese. I had heard of him before, but never really dug into his background. But, yeah, I can relate to the disgust he and his wife felt for that selfish, shallow, narcissistic crowd. I never truly felt at home with them. Many kind of sneered at my Roman Catholicism and the fact that I was a Jesuit seminarian. Vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience – how quaint! And other snarky remarks. The thing is I was truly motivated by love for the poor and the desire to use socialism as a conduit to make some evidence of God’s love evident in their concrete lives. I was not drawn into Marxism because of envy or rage. Or a need for power. I was just a young man who was trying to make sense of his own life and make sense of the world and history. In fact, I am glad of that sojourn, because it did expand me intellectually and emotionally. But, in the end, I decided that the overwhelming evidence of history, science, and all knowledge about humanity said no-can-do to Utopia.
