I find Bawer’s article a matter of concern. It would help if Bawer supported his claims with a few quotes from Obama as Mike pointed out; however, I have read Bruce before and found him a responsible writer. If he says that Obama openly idolizes Malcolm X in the memoir, I’m inclined to believe Bawer. It’s not all that surprising really.
However, if Obama is as focused on the oppression of blacks, particularly black males, as Bawer says, that’s a big red flag. America is hardly perfect, but we’ve made huge strides in that area to the point it seems that further emphasis on blacks as victims worsens matters for all and for blacks.
