I do not think that the phenomenon of the abandoned child idolizing the absent parent is a particularly rare one.

Winston Churchill springs to mind. Both parents treated him shabbily as a youth and he repaided them with love and enormous filial devotion.

Winston at least had the decency to revere as well the nanny who was the principal support and mainstay of his youth. But then he was a man of enormous magniminity — and a Torie.
