John in Rolando

I live in the Rolando area of San Diego, close to SDSU. The smoke was worse yesterday. The winds were calm today so that helped. I think overall San Diegans have showed their true colors. The outpouring has been amazing. I took some scary shots of the fires from my front porch today. I’m situated right atop a mesa and can see the mountains from my porch. The roads have been quiet because no one is working and the schools are all closed. That has helped firefighters. San Diegans didn’t fall apart. They helped each other. Despite not having the resources to fight the fire the various agencies remained calm and did the best they could. As of last report, over 1,000 homes were lost. Think about that… 1,000 homes! I didn’t have to evacuate (yet) but my sister who lives up north did. She’s usually pretty calm but she has a new baby so was frightened. Luckily I’m here and in a relatively safe area so she could come to me. It’s amazing the little things you don’t think about. Like, many businesses are closed. Many services aren’t available either like mail and the post office, etc. I was supposed to have a new fridge and stove delivered today but Best Buy called and they can’t come until this is all over. I realize those things are trivial. I’m just making a point regarding how all of us here are effected; some in major ways and others in minor ways. There’s a fire about 10 miles east of me (the spreading Harris fire). It’s probably too early to tell but it looks like it won’t spread much further. I think the worst is over.
