The Golden Notebooks was and remains an anti-Communist (anti-totalitarian book). It is only secondarily a “feminist” novel.
If one doubts Lessing’s commitment to the anti-Totalitarian cause let him read “The Good Terrorist” as well as this op-ed piece in the New York Times:

The New York Times would like to see her as a “feminist” author but her own words belie this easy label.
