Not to be too picky or detract from your excellent point, Patrick, but the Columbus Public School district is NOT 15th in the nation in size. More like 50th, as of 2000. They’ve shrunk some since, and may not currently place any higher than 65th or so.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a big district, with a bit over 50K students. But larger metro areas often have more than one district, so you have to go by number of students, not by city population. 15th place right now is somewhere around 140K students. 50th would be around 65K students. Anything over 45K or so is in the top 100.
