Romney did well playing to the Michigan crowd, especially with the dig to Governor Granholm and the one-state-recession, an all to recognized reality in Michigan. He answered pointedly, and of course seemed prepared, except for the “check with the lawyers” comment. Though it made sense, who didn’t expect someone would capitalize on it?
Gulliani threw everything right back at Romney. The back and forth between the two was entirely expected. Nothing real new there.
It’s a challenge for me to see the two presumptive front-runners able to attack each other’s message – they both have records that can support conservatism but they also both have records that show they had a liberal base to please and that they routinely did. Either one of those two can be fairly criticized for their history in supporting (or not supporting, as the case may be) conservatism.
Thompson held his own. I’m proud of him for that. I was hoping for guns ablazing – but I’ll settle for him being able to show he knew what he was talking about. As soon proves he has the fire-in-the-belly to win this thing, I think he’ll prove a formidable candidate.
Did anyone else notice McCain? I sure didn’t.
