Let’s Take Some Pride in Obama’s Election — No Matter Who We Voted For
I’m proud that the US can elect a black president, but I feel that the election of Barack Obama as that first black president, is embarrassing. It’s not embarrassing because he’s black. It’s embarrassing because his resume is so thin that a rational voter might have considered him for the House of Representatives, but no serious political observer would consider him qualified for the Presidency. If Obama was a white male would he have had any chance of being elected? Indeed, even being selected as his party’s candidate?
Rational voters didn’t elect Barack Obama, he was elected by an anti-Bush mob. Look at the voters in Harlem who supported his selection of Sarah Palin as his running-mate, and his pro-life policies (as unearthed by Howard Stern). Look at the woman at his rally who was overwhelmed with emotion because if Obama won, “she didn’t have to worry about paying for gasoline or her mortgage payments”, any longer.
There’s a not-so-fine line between hope and demagoguery … I’m afraid Obama was on the wrong side of that line. I fear his presidency will evoke memories of the Carter years, and might be enough of a disaster (not entirely of Obama’s doing), that it might be a long while before we see the second black president.
