Let’s Take Some Pride in Obama’s Election — No Matter Who We Voted For
Yes, we have — or will have, on Jan.20 — a black president, and it’s a relief to have proven that that’s possible. But it’s not as big a deal as all that; it would have happened 12 years ago — and he would have been a Republican to boot — if Colin Powell’s wife hadn’t turned chicken.
Democrats love to call for unity and good feeling as soon as they’ve gotten their way, but they invented the “He’s Not My President” bumper stickers, and they’d have dusted them off this time if McCain had won, all the while grumbling about stolen elections and telling themselves that America had proven its hopeless racism by electing him.
Myself, I echo the words of John Wayne on Kennedy’s election in 1960: “I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my president and I hope he does a good job.” There’s a reason you have to quote a Republican to say that: no living Democrat has ever said it, and none living today will say it when, as it must, the White House changes parties once again.
