I agree with SteveB. Social conservatives comprise 27% of the electorate; not enough to win an election. As for Ayn Rand, her philosophy has been wildly distorted by her enemies: she did not stand for anti-social values, but rather believed that developing one’s unique abilities would translate into social benefits. It struck a rare note in the collectivist 1930s.
