“Amy Alkon :
To me, a fetus is not a person until it emerges from the womb. ”
Does that make it so because it seems that way to you?
This is the kind of amoral logic that permits some people like Michale Moore to call terrorists freedom fighters. Some people consider women second-class humans.
Or infidels.
It’s moral relativism at best.
I assert it is immoral.
If we are to have simple and universal human rights certainly life is primary among them all.
Just as one man’s right to swing his arm ends where the next man’s nose begin – the mother’s liberty
end with the advent of CONCEPTION.
As I said before: what is conceived at CONCEPTION if it is not a life, with UNIQUE DNA.
A fertilized egg is a new person. PERIOD.
“Viability” after 22 or 20 weeks is nonsense; a newborn is not viable without nurturing – for YEARS!
Any other argument about the embryo or fetus is BS. The fertilized egg is a person.
NOW…. how do we get there from here?
That’s a political and social issue which is more complicated.
I agree with Bush: we need to create a culture of life: a society in which pregnancies go full term.
This will take time.
Most great causes do.
There MIGHT be a scientific/meical solution which could solve things:
Maybe science could discover a way for a mother to end her pregnancy without killing the baby? Perhaps by removing and transplanting the embryo/ Perhaps even freezing it before re-implantation?
After all, why should the BABY pay with its life because the mother doesn’t want her?
After all:
there are thousands of women who want babies and would love to get pregnant but can’t.
We might turn these unwanted pregnancies into a WIN-WIN-WIN:
the mother who wants to terminate her pregnancy can
another woman gets “pregnant”
AND THE BABY LIVES.
