The unmentioned word that underlies this article and brings that reaction in your eyes and throat , that choking near sobbing emotion that grips you so powerfully is sacrifice. Four thousand men sacrificed their lives to give Europe freedom and prosperity.Many more followed and much was spent to ensure that sacrifice had significance.
It all seems so ancient now as we question the wisdom of such an event
But that word lives on as we ponder our world. That word is so closely associated with our being that we measure todays news by the same standard.
