“How could anyone accept that the root of the trouble in Iraq and Afghanistan lay in Iran?”

OK, let’s revise the above sentence to read:

–How can anyone not accept that much of the trouble in Iraq and Afghanistan lay in Iran?–

Does that sound better?

Michael Ledeen may be guilty of a slight exaggeration—but for the most part he is on target. The feckless Jimmy Carter is responsible for not firmly supporting the Shah in his time of need. American presidents ever since then have essentially pretended that Iran poses little threat to our security. We are now possibly confronted with a regime committed to a nihilistic ideology. There is also another thing that is beyond dispute: Iran should be among the very top issues debated in the 2008 elections.
